Worship

At Tyson House, worship is at the center of our community, inviting us into relationship with God and with one another in praise, adoration, and thanksgiving.

Every Sunday at 6:04pm we gather to share a free, home-cooked meal provided by members of a local congregation.  After dinner, we move into our chapel for worship with Holy Communion. Following worship, we enjoy a time of fellowship and dessert in the great hall.  Our celebration at the Lord’s Table becomes for us a meal-within-a-meal through which we are spiritually renewed and strengthened for a new week.

About our Worship

“Joyful,” “contemplative,” “Spirit-filled,” and “restful” are just a few of the adjectives that are often used to describe our Sunday evening worship.  Our service begins with a gathering time that includes a period of silence for reflection and confession of sin.  The service continues with scripture readings, a sermon, prayers, and Holy Communion.  Students provide leadership in every facet of worship planning, and our many talented musicians provide an array of traditional, contemporary, and multi-cultural songs of praise.

Regarding Holy Communion

In the Episcopal and Lutheran traditions we typically participate in Holy Communion, also known as Eucharist, Lord’s Supper, or Mass, every Sunday.  During this celebration we gather to give thanks for God’s mighty acts of salvation throughout history and to share bread and wine as we recall Jesus’ last supper with his disciples.  In Holy Communion, all are invited to bring their joys, sorrows, tears, and laughter to Christ’s table.  Through it, we experience the presence of the Living God.  At Tyson House, we believe that Christ welcomes all to his table.

Our music team consists of singers, pianists, guitarists, percussionists, strings, winds, and brass, and typically meets Sundays before dinner at 5:00. If you are interested in participating in music, please contact Zack Nyein: znyein@utk.edu.
