At Tyson House, we’re walking a living tradition, one that’s constantly transforming itself and us through the power of the Holy Spirit.
We take our tradition seriously at Tyson House. Honoring both the richness and complexity of our Reformation heritage, we believe we are called to be a unique and vital expression of the Body of Christ at the University of Tennessee. As a joint mission of the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, we have inherited a living tradition, committed to:
- Worshiping God in the beauty of holiness
- Intellectual inquiry and theological conversation
- Empowering lay people for ministry
- Striving for justice and peace
- Building God’s Kingdom, in which there are no outcasts
We’re a community of faith invested in the idea that God calls us all to be new creations and to show God’s love to the world. We believe in a Gospel that will not be co-opted by political pundits or compromised by easy answers. We’re a sacred place where you can come, be who you are, ask the difficult questions life brings, experience the new life Christ offers, and develop your own unique gifts in community. Our house on Melrose Avenue is open during most of the day and always provides a place for rest, renewal, and friendship. Throughout the week, we are committed to living the words we say, sing, and preach by engaging in Bible study, mission projects, and fellowship. There’s always something going on! And at the center of this shared life is worship, for which we gather every Sunday evening at 6:04 PM, to freely give of what we have received and to receive what God so freely gives. We receive Christ, and then we go out to be Christ to the world.
At Christ’s table, we welcome everyone into a timeless tradition that calls us above all else to love one another. Period.
We think that’s something worth sharing – worth walking together.
